The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972, and the 100th athlete was inducted in 1987. Today, in addition to exhibits and displays, the museum features outreach programs geared toward educating children and youth about sportsmanship.

The Portsmouth Lightship was built in 1915 and served for nearly 50 years along the east coast. It was retired in 1964 and converted into a museum that is filled with artifacts, photographs, uniforms, models and more.
